Any Day Now (or, America's Alterity Suborned)

Today that order, which has virtually reached its culmination, finds itself grappling with the antagonistic forces scattered throughout the very heartlands of the global, in all the current convulsions.”

another cup drained

another sheet stained with

red ink to make you think

you’re in the middle class

another used syringe

another smokeless smoke

another tasteless joke

aimed to make you cringe

another any other day

another TV dinner binge

on cable news feeds

sponsored by the Burger King

another bourgeoisie

conspiracy to thwart

the workers from uniting

to overthrow the court

another Citizens United

bought by Brothers Koch

another burst of doublespeak

another twist on Classic Coke

to simulate quenching thirst

to stimulate consumer mindless

buying oil wars for hybrid cars

designed to hold the status quo

another thought that maybe

things ain’t right—black is white

another day the Dow is up

is down for any other town—

distracted by a shampoo ad

cascading auburn sleeveless silk

satin weaving Latin smiles

amber waves of soy milk

and Golden Colorado’s brewed

enough to fill the Super Bowl

so another year by halftime will

be going down the rabbit hole

of endless commercial breaks

of consciousness slipped down

in between the cushion cracks

with the chips and loose change
